Poise Latinos to Navigate the Road to Effective Leadership
Southside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance (SINA) and the Connecticut Puerto Rican Forum (CPRF) are pleased to announce the Latino Educational Leadership Development Program, generously supported by a grant from the Latino Endowment Fund – a fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.
The Latino Civic Engagement Academy prepares Latinos to navigate the roads to leadership positions in a variety of sectors. The program feature this year is designed for Latino leaders to become engaged in efforts that will cause positive change in the educational systems and policies as they affect Latino students’ ability to succeed. The program consists of a series of workshops with a focus on getting elected and/or appointed to board of education. A significant portion will focus on understanding the inner workings of the education system in order to determine the best methods to affect change.
What are the benefits of participating in the LCEA’s program?
Participants will receive an extensive overview of topics, and practices relevant to the education environment. Knowledge, skills development, peer learning, coaching and mentoring will be provided to support each participant in becoming a more accomplished educational advocate while learning to determine the best methods to affect policy change. Each participant will receive a program valued at $1,679 via eight workshop topics over four dynamic Saturday sessions.
Participation in the LCEA’s program will include:
- Four 6 ½ hour Saturday sessions (24 training hours), knowledge acquisition, skills development and interaction with peers and leaders in the field.
- Participants will have access to a cadre of individuals committed to effecting change.
- Opportunities to dialogue with elected and/or appointed Board of Education officials.
- Developing an election plan and preparing for its implementation.

Who should apply?
Latinos interested in educational leadership and advocacy. Latinos who currently are: serving on a board of education; vying for a seat on a board of education; exerting leadership as a senior level educational administrator or an education advocate; and is planning to use information obtained from these training workshops to effect positive change in education policy and systems. Participants are expected to attend all workshops, complete short
homework projects, and be committed to assist others on running for an elective position, and attend periodic follow up sessions.

How to register
Download and Complete the application form by September 13, 2006. Please include a bio or resume. A registration fee of $100.00 must accompany the application. Applications without a registration fee shall not be considered. However, the fee is fully refundable for withdrawals before the start of the first workshop.
